Case Description

We have developed and implemented an Internet of Things (IoT) system that represents a synthesis of advanced technologies for face detection, office visitor tracking, temperature monitoring, and fire detection, ensuring the integrity of operational business management. The face detection technology allows an organization to monitor the presence of employees in the workplace. The technology solution for office visitor tracking improves business security and simplifies the process of managing interactions with customers by tracking their arrivals and departures in a real time mode. In addition, this system allows monitoring employees’ compliance with warehouse temperature conditions to manage the accrual of bonuses to their salaries. In turn, continuous temperature monitoring ensures a comfortable and safe indoor working environment, which is also critical for businesses dealing with temperature-sensitive products. Finally, outside fire detection technologies improve the safety of organizations by quickly identifying and warning of potential hazards. In this regard, our comprehensive IoT system provides automation of all of the above processes, helping to eliminate manual errors and increasing business efficiency by optimizing operations, reducing security risks, and maintaining comfortable working settings.

Client Profile

Our client that was the first to use this system in practice was positioned as a medium-sized agricultural business with a network of offices and warehouses. This company required close monitoring of the activities and movements of its employees to ensure the safety of its facilities and facilitate the calculation of salaries depending on attendance. In order to address these challenges, the client put forward a number of requirements for developing a technology solution, including tracking the arrival and departure of employees, managing office visitors, monitoring the internal climate for compliance with temperature standards in workspaces and agricultural storage rooms, and detecting potential fire hazards in outside areas surrounding warehouses.

Reasons for Developing a Customized Solution

We concluded that solving unique problems and meeting customer requirements needed the development of a customized technology solution. In particular, we used existing IP cameras from various brands rather than HEOP cameras with automatic heat and fire detection, as we were guided by budgetary considerations and focused on the affordability of the resulting system for medium-sized businesses. We also ruled out existing off-the-shelf systems because they were unable to provide the combination of features the client desired, such as automatic clocking of employee arrivals and departures, visitor tracking, indoor temperature monitoring, and fire detection in outside areas. Accordingly, we developed a unique and customized technological product that satisfied all requirements set by the customer.

Technology Stack

We have selected a technology stack that plays a key role in developing a reliable and efficient software solution for agricultural and other medium-sized businesses. In particular, our solution leverages the functionality of the AWS cloud platform, including services such as Kinesis for real-time data streaming, Rekognition for advanced image analysis, S3 for scalable and secure storage, Lambda for serverless computing, DynamoDB for efficient data management, ReactJS for the user interface, and SNS for high-quality communications. The hardware of the solution is built on Arduino to provide cost-effective and reliable integration of Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

Description of the Team

Implementing this Internet of Things solution has involved an experienced and professional team:

  • Team leader. Provides operational leadership and ensures that developed software solutions meet client goals.
  • Project Manager (part time). Manages project timelines and resource allocation and facilitates communications between team members and the client.
  • Two full stack engineers (full time). Provide development of external and internal system components and support their integration with the AWS cloud platform.
  • IoT Engineer (full time). Specializes in system hardware, with a focus on integrating Arduino devices with cloud architecture.
  • Quality Assurance Engineer (part time). Conducts thorough testing of all functions of the software solution to ensure the required quality, reliability, and security of the system.

Duration and Results of Implementation

Within three months of implementation, the developed Internet of Things (IoT) system gave our client the expected positive results. In particular, face detection and tracking technologies for employees and visitors made it much easier for the company to calculate salary bonuses or deductions by providing real-time information about their movements. In turn, temperature monitoring ensured a safe working environment and significantly reduced the risk of damage to agricultural products due to non-compliance with temperature conditions. In addition, the fire detection system in external warehouses strengthened the company’s safety protocols, allowing it to identify potential hazards quickly. As a result, the comprehensive solution that we proposed significantly simplified business management processes and provided our client with a high level of control over its operations. The reliability of our system and its security measures made the business more resilient against potential threats. In this regard, we have realized our commitment to provide a solution that fully meets the client’s expectations in terms of its quality, affordability, disruption, and operational excellence.
